The CM9 is a semi-automatic pistol with typical Kahr design. Its cartridge was introduced to the market together with the Luger semi-automatic pistol which were first adopted by the German Navy in 1904. The German Army adopted this cartridge in 1908. This cartridge has since 1908 been adopted by the military of nearly each non-Communist power. The CM9 has become the most popular and also widely-used handgun cartridge.

The way of the performance of the 9mm Luger cartridge has a bit more power than the .38 Special cartridge, however falls well short of the .357 Magnum.
